Photo: Morecast app Vanuatu's official cyclone season ended on April 30, but the slow-moving tropical low lurking over northern Vanuatu waters for the past few days has just reached cyclone intensity and has been named as Cyclone Donna. The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department has issued a Blue Alert for Torba, Sanma and Penama provinces. Cyclone Donna, currently a Category 1 system, is 365km east of Sola and tracking ESE. At this stage it looks likely to make landfall in northern Vanuatu as a Category 2 or 3 system on Friday, May 5. The GFS model forecast (shown above) suggests that Cyclone Donna may make a sharp turn southward towards Vanuatu's central and southern islands, following Vanuatu's 'cyclone alley', although this could change. Cyclone Donna is the second tropical cyclone to form in the space of a month, following Cyclone Cook in early April.
